For this study, we analyzed epidote-garnet-glaucophane-white mica blueschist facies rock from the Ruby terrane in west-central Alaska. However, the timing of the onset of subduction and the collision between the continental crust of northern Alaska and the offshore island arc is not well constrained. This study tests delineating a clockwise P-T-t path for high grade metamorphic rocks using a multi-technique correlation of ages from co-occurring minerals known to close under different conditions, specifically garnet (high temperature) and K-white mica (moderate temperature). We reason that timing of the retrograde metamorphic history can be tied to exhumation and the presence of heterogeneous K-white mica allows for potentially more nuanced information via geochronologic analysis of individual zones. We analyzed K-white mica using in situ UV-laser ablation 40Ar/39Ar and 40Ar/39Ar step-heating, and co-occurring garnet using the Lu-Hf method. Garnet Lu-Hf ages were acquired using column chemistry at Washington State University. Two fractions of garnet separate yielded an age of 159 ± 9 Ma while six fractions yielded a significantly younger age of 132 ± 8 Ma. These ages suggest that the main period of garnet growth was between ~159 Ma and ~132 Ma, and leave open the unlikely possibility of two episodes of garnet growth representing a protracted (30+ million year) interval between initial subduction underplating of continental material and initiation of exhumation. The 40Ar/39Ar data from in situ UV-laser ablation and step-heating techniques of two samples yielded a date of ~ 120 Ma, which allows us to estimate when the Ruby terrane was decompressing on a retrograde path. Together, the garnet and K-white mica dates suggest that the Ruby terrane was exhumed from blueschist facies conditions to greenschist facies conditions over ~10 million years.
