A Class Act

Class Act

Class Act Shorts are short-short plays (4-8 minutes) intended for use in the acting classroom. There is plenty of conflict and each character has a discernible goal. While intended for the college classroom, the language and subject matter is suitable for high school as well. All of the plays in Class Act Shorts have been tested in the classroom and in writer workshops. With plenty of laughter and a handful of tears they could be compiled for an evening of performance.

New York Times bestselling author Jerry Craft returns with a companion book to New Kid, winner of the 2020 Newbery Medal, the Coretta Scott King Author Award, and the Kirkus Prize. This time, it’s Jordan’s friend Drew who takes center stage in another laugh-out-loud funny, powerful, and important story about being one of the few kids of color in a prestigious private school. Eighth grader Drew Ellis is no stranger to the saying “You have to work twice as hard to be just as good.” His grandmother has reminded him his entire life. But what if he works ten times as hard and still isn’t afforded the same opportunities that his privileged classmates at the Riverdale Academy Day School take for granted? To make matters worse, Drew begins to feel as if his good friend Liam might be one of those privileged kids. He wants to pretend like everything is fine, but it's hard not to withdraw, and even their mutual friend Jordan doesn't know how to keep the group together. As the pressures mount, will Drew find a way to bridge the divide so he and his friends can truly accept each other? And most important, will he finally be able to accept himself? New Kid, the first graphic novel to win the Newbery Medal, is now joined by Jerry Craft's powerful Class Act.

Drawing is a Class Act is aimed at supporting non-specialist art teachers, but more experienced art teachers will find it useful too. The book provides a structured approach to the development of drawing skills. Using a skills-based approach to teaching drawing will raise standards in art and more importantly, pupils' self-esteem and confidence, which in turn will help promote high standards in other curriculum areas. The book: sets out clearly the progression of skills to be taught; gives examples of how the skills can be applied; contains carefully planned, clearly laid-out lesson plans; provides examples of pupils' artwork for every lesson; covers all of the National Curriculum Programmes of Study related to drawing.

To make a favorable impression in his social and professional circles, a man has to have panache, style, and excellent etiquette. He should know how to dress for a night on the town, how to transform himself into a gracious host and a welcome guest, and how to write an impressive e-mail. With an eye toward contemporary issues, this witty and informative reference shows him the best way to handle every situation, from dining and dating to attending parties and the theater to proper cell phone conduct to putting his best foot forward in the workplace. What’s more, it teaches those skills and gestures that separate ordinary men from the gentlemen—including how to tie a bow tie and help a woman with her coat.
